Second Work Experience

Day 1

My first day at Newton Regency Care Home started at 9:00, where it started by looking around the building and talking to residence with one of the staff. After that helped gather the residence to the activity room for exercise and jeopardy. Later did the walking program with one of the staff, where they took one resident at a time for a walk. Then talked to one of the residence in the lounge. At lunch time helped gather them to the lunch room. After the lunch break, brought residence that had an hair appointment to the salon. Then did a "one to one" with one of the residence. Most of the time was spent by talking to the residence. Later helped the staff organizing for bowling. After bowling handed juice to the residence then left home at 4:00. It was a nice and relaxing job. It is a very interesting place. Jobs range from being janitors, maintenance staff, cooks, nurses, care aids, recreational managers and recreational aids.

Day 2

Started my day by talking to residence and doing “one to one” with some of the residence. Around half an hour before fitness and fun, started gathering them to the activity room. Joined with the residence for fitness and fun. After exercise helped set up and keep score for golf. After golf gathered everyone back to the dining room and gathered everyone that wanted to have fish and chips in the activity room. Helped serve for the lunch bunch. After my break, gathered everyone for ice cream and movie. While they were watching a movie did manicure on some of the residence. Around 3:30 gathered everyone back to dining room for supper. Then left home. Working and going to school in totally different, because in school we just sit around and do our work. But at this work place you have go around and talk to all the residence as much as possible and convince them to join in all the activities.

Day 3

Started my day by walking around and doing “one to one” with some of the residence. At around time for exercise started gathering them to the activity room, and today they had "shape in up " or the residence on first floor. After gathering everyone, joined in with the residence for "shape in up". Then gathered everyone back to the dining room for lunch, and went for my lunch break. After lunch did some “one to one” with some of the residence. Since it was nice out side sat outside in the front with one of the residence. At the end of the day did some puzzles with one of the residence and also helped one of the staff clean the bird cage. The education needed for this job is basically similar to a nurse but the activity staffs have specialized, so can communicate well with seniors, entertain them and they should enjoy being around seniors. One positive experience I had with a residence is how they love volunteers visiting them, talking to them, and how much they appreciate my visit. One negative experience I had is how hard it is to handle some of the residence, who can’t communicate well, don’t know where they are, and some that get really aggressive.

Day 4

Last day of work experience started of as usual, walking around and doing “one to one” with some of the residence. Since it was my last day I did a lot of "one to one" with the residence. Around half an hour before fitness and fun, started gathering them to the activity room, and joined with the residence for fitness and fun. After exercise helped set up and keep score for golf. After golf gathered everyone back to the dining room. Then went for my lunch. Today they had grade ones coming in for singing and socializing, so helped gather everyone back to the activity room. Today it was a birthday of one of the residence, so we celebrated his birthday with the RCA children. Then served ice cream and cake to the residence and the children. Then they had movie and manicure after the children left. I went and wrote down the “Quote for the day”, which was given to the staff from one of the residence. I also worked on a puzzle with one of residence. Today was my last day, so I spent a lot of time saying bye to the residence and the staff at the end of the day.

First Work Experience

Day 2

In the morning labelled bottles with Daniel, which was for clients to send samples in. After worked with the login technicians. First they taught me how to open up samples from the coolers and organize them according to the paper work. After she showed me how to fill out the sheet, where you had to sign and right the time, date and the temperature at which the samples arrived at. After she let me open rest of them, and made sure I was doing it right. Next, she showed me how to login the samples into the computer, so they can be sent for the testing. The cooler from other clients or weekly clients had to be sent back. We refilled them with the same kind of bottles as before, and took them to the shipping bay. After went for lunch. Came back finished opening coolers. When we were done, she told me to make some kits, where samples are brought in for the test. Later scanned paper work for the receptionist, so they can be saved on to the computer. After scanning folded paper work and put them into envelopes. Left home. The types of job that exists in this workplace: lab technicians, team leaders, scientists, login techicians, data delivery, invoicing, customer service, shipper, and manager. Working and going to school are very similar, but I think school is more stress than work.

Day 3

In the morning did some filing for the receptionist. After worked in the micro lab, where they tested drinking water, waste water, water from lakes, and water from many other places. First she showed me what they do and explained all the kinds of test they do. After I watched her read the plates under UV light. They were looking for E coli. If the wells in the plates spark bright blue than it was E coli positive and if it didn’t it was E coli negative. She showed me how to prepare the plates. I helped her tap the plate to release the bubbles inside. She showed me another method, where they mixed the sample with media and poured it into another tray. After she put it into a machine where it got sealed. I helped her with some of the other samples, then she showed me how to read the results. If any of the wells turn yellow than it was total coliform, so she had to put it under UV light to see if it was also E coli positive. After lunch I watched her do cell membrane filtration for some of the samples. At that time they were busy in the shipping area, so I helped them open more coolers. Then left home. Education required for these jobs is a 4 year degree, and most of them have more than on degree.

Day 4

It was the day that I had to work in the organics lab. In the morning watched one of the lab technician read results from a graph on the computer. Later watched her make a standard solution. Then worked with another lab technician, who was extracting soil samples. She was measuring them for different tests. (BTEX, EPH, PAH) She taught me how to do it and then let me do the EPH and the PAH for some of the samples. For the EPH you had to get a required amount of soil and some chemical and methanol. She never said anything about the chemical, so when I lifted the pump a little drops squirted out on the paper. She took it into the fume hood right away. After it had been spilled a little bit then she tells me it evaporates real quickly and the gas is poisonous to inhale. It is also corrosive to skin. She was working with it outside the fume hood and never said aything about it being poisonous. The chemical dichloromethanol and what happenend will be engraved in my memory for ever , because she scared me saying that it can give you cancer. She said you wouldn't know until ten year from now about what will happen. Later she let me measure out more of the other samples. Then she continued, while I went for lunch. After lunch, she showed me this machine where they put the samples in and the machine shakes the sample for an hour. Then we removed it and put them into the centrifuge so the soil can be extracted. She showed me how to work the centrifuge and then let me do the rest of the samples. There was sill an hour left, so she asked me to make pipettes. Then I left home. In this job you have to deal with customer, but i did not get an experience with a customer.

Day 5

In the morning did some more filing for the receptionist. Later worked in the inorganic lab. First I had to dump out so many of the samples, which were done with the testing. After worked with one of the lab technician in the lab. Where I watched her test samples. Later she showed be how to make a buffer solution, which was added into the samples. Then she poured the samples into clear class and read it in a spectroscope. She recorded the results into the computer and asked me to check if she typed it right. She told me to sign checked by, because they needed at least one other person to make sure before they sent the results. After lunch I had to separate a box full of test tubes. Take the good ones out and throw the broken once out. While doing it there was a weird smell. It smelt like some gas. I thought it was, because of the experiment. Later it started getting strong, and one of the lab technician also smelt it. He said the smell in getting worse, I told him it smells like gas, and right then on the PA they tell everyone to evacuate the building. This was totally unexpected. The people from upstairs were already outside. The lab near us also had to evacuate. They called terason gas, and the manager took attendants to see if everyone was outside. We stayed outside for a long time since terason gas took for ever to come. It was almost time to go home, but my money and bus pass was inside the building our supervisor offered us a ride home, and offered us bus money . This was one of the positive experience with a co-worker. The manager decided to call the fire department, and the fire truck came so much faster. After terason gas also came, and together they tried to find out what was wrong. Later they let us all back in. It was time to go home, so I left home.

Day 10

Wasn't slow as day 9. In the morning helped a lab technician type results into the computer. Then changed the pH solutions in the medicine cups, because they changed it every second day. Later rinsed some glass wear in distilled water. After Daniel and I had to store tested samples in an order that helps them find it faster in the cooler room. Then did some scanning for the receptionist, since there was not much to do in the lab. When the scanning was done the receptionist took me to the shipping area to see if they needed any help. The login technician asked "Do you wanna see something cool?" She opened a cooler full of organs of caribou and moose (livers, kidneys, and muscles) and a little grouse bird . This had come from Yukon, because the clients wanted to test metals in it. They wanted to know if there is pollution in the forests. That was really bad. The receptionist was telling me about how they give a glass beaker to the students and get them to sign everyones name on it. They also gave us a glass beaker and we got everyone to sign it. After lunch we went to the micro lab and watched the lab technician read more plates under UV light. Then helped in the shipping (open up coolers). It was time to go home, and one of the lab technicians wanted to see me before going home. She gave me chocolate and said "thanks for the help." Everyone was really nice and wished good luck for the future and thanked me for the help. Then I left home.
